Forklift Training In Utah

Hailed as the number four Best States for Business by the Forbes magazine, Utah has proven to be one of the best places to find employment. With this being said, working in the state of Utah is a good place to start a wonderful career. If you are considering this option, then get a forklift operator certificate.

In the US today, it is a fact that many people are jobless. Many are not fortunate enough to retain a job or find a job that can support them well. But you can count yourself out and get forklift training. This training will give you many employment opportunities as well as the needed experience that many industrial companies are looking for. In order for you to get this training, what you need to do is enroll in a forklift training facility. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) Req. 1910.178 requires that every forklift operator must have proper skills and forklift training before they are allowed to operate a forklift machine. The state of Utah strongly implements this rule to all interested applicants.

Forklift training involves classroom training and hands-on practical test. In classroom training, students/trainees are taught the importance of forklifts and its operation. They will be taught by qualified experts who will equip them with the knowledge they need when it comes to forklift operation. Different topics will be given and discussed during this training. So it is important that trainees participate since there will be a written exam after the said training.

Here are some of the common topics involved in classroom training:

  • Operating instructions
  • Differences from automobile
  • Controls and instrumentation
  • Engine or motor operation
  • Steering and maneuvering
  • Forklift Visibility
  • Fork and attachment adaptation, operation and uses
  • Vehicle capacity and stability
  • Refueling and recharging of batteries
  • Operating limitations
  • Surface conditions
  • Composition of stability
  • Load manipulation, stacking and unstacking
  • Pedestrian traffic
  • Narrow aisle and restricted areas
  • Operating on ramps and sloped surfaces
  • Potentially hazardous environments

Students must pass the written exam in order to proceed to hands-on driving. In some states, a minimum score of at least 85% is needed. Check your training facility for the standard score that they require. So make sure you do well in your written exam.

The hands-on practical test allows students to drive an actual forklift with the supervision of a trained and certified instructor. Instructors will evaluate the trainee’s capacity and competency when it comes to operating a powered industrial truck. In order to pass this test, students must demonstrate the right skills and proper safety measures needed in a forklift operator.

A forklift operator certificate valid for three years will be granted to those successful students/trainees once they have passed and completed all training. This certificate must be renewed before its expiration date. Holders of this certificate must have retraining upon renewal to ensure that the operator has the knowledge and skills to operate a forklift truck. Those who have failed the training may be required to train again so make sure that you do well during these trainings.

Trainees must take note that refresher training may be given to applicants regardless of their prior experiences if they are involved in the following:

  • Unsafe operation
  • Accidents or near miss
  • An evaluation of that the operator needs more training
  • Unsafe working conditions
  • New forklifts are introduced

Please note that if an operator has previously received training in a topic specified in this section, and the training is appropriate to the truck and working conditions encountered, additional training in that topic is not required if the operator has been evaluated and found competent to operate the truck safely. This is done to avoid duplicative training.

Other ways to attain your forklift operator certificate is through online training approved by OSHA and through an employer under the “Train the Trainer” Program. Make sure you also checked these other options.
